Innovative Development of High Energy Density Pouch Batteries: Farasis Energy Material Breakthroughs Powering Diverse Applications

2025-05-30

Amidst the accelerating wave of global electrification and energy transformation, power batteries—serving as the core driving force and essential support—are advancing rapidly with intense competition and frequent technological breakthroughs. Upholding first-principles thinking and long-term strategic focus, Farasis Energy is firmly committed to the pouch cell technology path. Backed by a diverse and highly compatible product matrix of electrochemical systems, the company continuously delivers innovative, efficient, and reliable solutions for green energy transition and the electrification of transportation.”says Weiran Jiang, Vice President of R&D and Dean of the R&D Institute, Farasis Energy

At the 17th China International Battery Fair (CIBF2025), the Advanced Lithium-ion Battery Technology Sub-Forum took place as scheduled. Below is a summary of the speech delivered by Weiran Jiang.

As a global leader in power battery solutions, Farasis Energy maintains a strategic commitment to the pouch cell technology roadmap. The core rationale lies in pouch cell’s ability to break through range limitations with high energy density, unlock energy-carrying potential through lightweight design, and adapt to multiple application scenarios with flexible packaging. Moreover, it serves as the optimal platform for the industrialization of solid-state batteries. Farasis Energy precisely positions itself at the forefront of next-generation battery competition in areas such as performance leap, cost optimization, cold-weather range, and enhanced safety—creating an innovative pathway from technological breakthrough to industrial implementation in support of the global energy transition.

Four Core Power Battery Solutions to Meet Diverse Market Demands

With robust technical expertise and sharp market insight, Farasis Energy has launched four core power battery solutions. These cover a wide range of applications—from high-performance to cost-efficient, and from mid- to short-range vehicles to energy storage—injecting new vitality into the power battery industry.

1. High-Nickel NCM + Semi-Solid/Solid-State: A Pioneer for the High-Performance Market

This ultra-high-performance solution targets premium passenger EVs, eVTOL aircraft, and robotics. It delivers energy density of 300–400 Wh/kg, with future solid-state battery targets of 400–750 Wh/kg and no upper limit. For example, the mass-produced eVTOL battery with an energy density of 350 Wh/kg not only enhances energy output but also endures over 10,000 real-world eVTOL flight cycles. It offers outstanding low-temperature and high-rate performance, including 8C continuous high-power discharge for 60 seconds at 30% SOC, and ultra-fast 15-minute charging—supporting rapid passenger turnaround. It is certified by the FAA for aviation safety, and under next-generation technologies. It exhibits no smoke, fire, or explosion in 100% SOC nail penetration tests—providing reliable power for low-altitude travel.

2. Mid-Nickel NCM + Semi-Solid: A Reliable, Cost-Effective Solution

This cost-performance optimized solution balances performance and cost for mid- to long-range EVs, hybrids, heavy trucks, and high-end electric two-wheelers. Mass-produced cells offer energy density of 260–290 Wh/kg with up to 5,000 cycle life and performance is close to high-nickel NCM cells. Through blending and coating technologies, costs are significantly reduced. Safety is ensured through successful passing 100% SOC nail penetration tests. The system supports custom 1,000 kWh battery packs for trunk logistics vehicles, enabling over 2 million km of travel. Coupled with 2 MW ultra-fast charging, it delivers over 500 km of range in 15 minutes, 42% lighter than mainstream LFP solutions. Incorporating NTP technology at the cell level, it provides a safe and efficient solution for heavy-duty logistics.

3. LFP Solution: An Ideal Choice for Cost-Sensitive Markets

With a “cost-first” philosophy, Farasis Energy began large-scale production of its LFP (lithium iron phosphate) solution last year, primarily in large-format pouch systems for mid- to short-range EVs, hybrids, buses, and energy storage. The first-generation product offers 220 Wh/kg energy density, long cycle life, and high-rate performance, including 6.6C fast charging and a 4,000-cycle life at 40°C. The second-generation product increases energy density to 240 Wh/kg and aims for 5,000 cycles at room temperature, supporting up to 10C fast charging. When paired with hybrid battery system configurations and an all-new thermal management strategy, cold-weather performance is greatly improved. For PHEVs and range-extenders, the ultra-fast charging variant with NTP technology ensures safety throughout the battery lifecycle, redefining hybrid standards.

4. Sodium-Ion Batteries: A Competitive Alternative for Mid-Range and Storage Markets

As a superior and cost-effective alternative, sodium-ion battery solutions are designed for mid-range EVs, start-stop systems, and energy storage. The energy-focused version delivers 180 Wh/kg, with over 3,000 cycles and excellent low-temperature performance—retaining over 90% capacity at -20°C. The power-type variant supports ultra-high-rate discharge (50C) with over 90% capacity retention and more than 10,000 cycles. The first-generation sodium-ion battery was applied in the world’s first sodium-powered EV, which rolled off the line at the end of 2023. The second generation is expected to launch by the end of 2025.

Dual-Path Solid-State Battery Strategy, SPS Drives Versatile Innovation

Farasis Energy is pursuing a dual-path solid-state battery strategy using oxide/polymer composites and sulfide systems. The oxide/polymer composite approach aligns well with existing technologies and gradually reduces liquid electrolyte usage via coating techniques—progressing steadily from semi-solid to quasi-solid to full solid-state. The sulfide-based route, focused on zero-liquid-electrolyte, all-solid-state electrolytes, aims to deliver 60Ah cells to strategic partners in small batches by the end of 2025.

Farasis’ s large-scale flagship product, SPS (Super Pouch Solution), is an industry-first module-free pouch power battery system. SPS offers long range, fast recharging, high safety, low cost, flexible integration, and upgradability. The system features integrated liquid cooling plates, exhaust channels, and structural components to reduce parts count. A composite enclosure significantly boosts energy density, with system-level packing efficiency of ≥80%. Its flexible cell dimensions suit passenger cars, e-aircraft, commercial vehicles, and marine applications. SPS supports multiple chemistries and offers seamless transition to solid-state batteries, fulfilling both current and future market demands.

Looking Ahead,Farasis Energy will continue to focus on high energy density pouch batteries, leveraging its deep technical expertise and material innovation to refine its four core product directions and accelerate the commercialization of cutting-edge technologies such as solid-state batteries. With the unique advantages of its SPS solution and the integration of AI and big data, the company aims to accelerate product iteration and deliver superior power battery solutions to global customers—driving the industry toward a new era of high-quality development.
